Last weekend we spent in Des Moines at the IBC's Bike Summit. Jen gave many, many talks about Safe Routes to School and even led a walking tour of the area around the Holiday Inn, which sits on the interstate and other busy thoroughfares. To be standing in the middle of expansive concrete designed solely for the movement of cars makes you feel really small and exposed. Finding safe ways to traverse this stuff is just one of the many things Jen is tackling as the SRTS coordinator for Iowa.

Saturday night was the party with spendy beer and glittery chandeliers.

The highlight of the evening was Tarik's talk on bikes and bike culture he observed during a recent trip to China.

We have a heap of dark, blurry photos, but this one reveals the attentiveness of some of Tarik's audience members.

Because of the cold we spent lots of time drinking coffee and talking and even some drinking beer. Happy guys (l to r) Steve, Kim, and Tarik.

Some highlights during my semester student teaching that have absolutely nothing to do with student teaching...

Steve & I got to hang out with friends from time to time.

Our camera finally gave up the ghost, so here we are being photoed by the local camera store guy with our soon-to-be new camera.
I got to prove my mettle on the letterpress with Jessica's help.

She & I helped organize a zine reading at the White Rabbit.

I read from her zine Dingbat.

And, then... the star of the show! John Porcellino!! He's a super guy and depicts life simply & beautifully in his zine King-Cat Comics.
I made ink and spun lots of yarn...

Steve & I went on sweet picnic rides with final destinations of art...
